As a small business expert, I have learned a few things. Here are my latest, greatest insights…
- There is information and implementation. You probably have PLENTY of information already.
- You are short on time and energy. Ergo, you get behind on implementation.
- Your front line team members can get things done for you. They will fix your business. If you ask them. If you let them. If you acknowledge and reward them for it. If you help them be successful.
- The opportunities to ask, allow, coach, celebrate and get things done are in the field, in the truck, and on the shop floor. You’ve got to Ride Along (or work Side by Side) with your team members to move from idle information to profitable implementation.
Recently, I was at Bob Ferrari’s company – Flue Season Chimney Services. I love Bob and his family and his team! I got the chance to Ride Along with Phil. I’ve hopped in his truck before. How fun to Ride Along again and see how much he has learned!
When I Ride Along, I like to layer on the praise. We just don’t do enough of that! Focus on what’s working and you’ll get more of it. I also ask permission to share one thing that may help the person I am with be more successful. Something to try. A phrase to use. A procedure. Something to stop saying. Lastly, I look for a project that this particular employee could help with. When it comes to implementation, it works for everyone to line up a project with a team member who will “champion” the idea. I’ve found that team members LOVE it when you value them, their opinions and their help getting things done.
Check out the video! Phil and I go on a waaaaaaayyy out there Service Call. Phil is awesome… a great guy, and a superior Sweep. At the end, I share one tip with him. (This tip can make a HUGE difference in his performance and confidence.) Fun!
You’ve probably got the info. Clarify your vision. Refine the plan. And let your team help you make it so. The Ride Along helps you connect with your team members…and so much good comes from spending quality time together.
