“Any time you sincerely want to make a change, the first thing you must do is to raise your standards. When people ask me what really changed my life eight years ago, I tell them that absolutely the most important thing was changing what I demanded of myself. I wrote down all the things I would no longer accept in my life, all the things I would no longer tolerate, and all the things that I aspired to becoming.”
~ Tony Robbins
I occasionally fall into the trap of trying to change…someone else. Have you done that, too? If only they would do this or that or whatever, they would be happier or more successful…or whatever.
And that is a waste of time. We can’t change anyone else. We are well served to consider what we can change: Yourself. That’s it. And that is potentially world changing.
Every time I focus my attention on someone else’s behavior, I am avoiding the “log” in my own eye. If I want to be of highest service to them, to everyone else, I must first raise my own standards.
So, back to basics for me. Perhaps what I am up to today may be of interest to you. But I am not going to try and change you. Fair enough?
- Trot out my Business Plan and UN-wrap it.
- Review my Perfect Life essay. How am I living it? Is it still what I want?
- Consider whether or not my Mission, my WHY, still resonates with me. (Good news. It does. I’m feeling fired up about expanding peace, prosperity and FREEDOM through honorable, profitable businesses.)
- Look over my Goals and consider due dates and progress.
- Review the Org Chart and give thanks for our awesome team.
- Ask a customer or team member for ideas and do some Super Thinking.
- Zip through the Top Projects and update as needed.
- Breathe. Ahhh.
- Be willing to quit, or pivot, or change! if something isn’t working.
- Block out time on my Calendar to get things done, above and beyond business-as-usual.
I commit to what I want and raise my standards, and identify things that I will no longer tolerate in my life. That’s change I can make.
It’s OK that I can’t change you, though I want to sometimes. I want to help. That’s the motivation behind our misguided behaviors. But wouldn’t it be really awful if others could change us, instead of us being the boss of us? The UN-thinking here, and it’s super important to remember, is the best way to help others is to bring your best self to the party. I do me and you do you. Imagine and plan your best businesses. Reach out for help if you want to and take only what resonates with you. What I do, what you do, may be compelling enough that others will say, “Let me see. That inspires me. Can I play, too?”
